Claim: A Facebook user claims former United ace Mason Greenwood said he plans to return to the Premier League and join Liverpool.

Verdict: False. Despite the strained relationship between Greenwood and coach De Zerbi, and Liverpool’s fervent interest in the 23-year-old, Marseille has not formally agreed to sell the player to the Reds this summer.

Former Manchester United ace, Mason Greenwood, who fell out of favour with both the club and fans over a sexual assault scandal with his girlfriend, has been rumoured to be returning to the English league to join Liverpool.
Back in 2022, the Crown Prosecution North West had asked the Greater Manchester Police to charge the then 21-year-old forward for attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault that resulted in actual bodily harm. Although the charges were dropped in 2023, the club and player mutually decided to terminate Greenwood’s remaining two-year contract and agreed to help find another club for the forward.
After spending the 2023/2024 season on loan with Spanish side Getafe, United sold him on a permanent deal to Marseille for £26.6 million. The Bratford native seems to be having a great time in France, as he has netted 18 goals and contributed four assists since joining the French top-tier football league.
However, a Facebook user, P.C. Darwin Nunez, has suggested that the 23-year-old is set to return to the Premier League and join Liverpool.
“BREAKING NEWS: I always dreamed of coming back to Manchester United— but they never gave me that chance…Now Liverpool is ready to open that door, to give me the opportunity I’ve been waiting for. And I won’t waste it. I’m coming back stronger, sharper, and with a point to prove…” the Facebook user quoted Greenwood.
As of Saturday, April 26, 2025, the claim had earned 990 likes, 67 comments, and three shares. In the comment section, some people were already enthusiastic, apparently eager for the forward to sign an agreement at Anfield. However, some thought the alleged arrangement was unlikely.
“I just knew that getting him from rivals would be impossible. But now that it is possible, let’s bring him back to the EPL,” Wilfred Soetseun Ruhl commented.
“Welcome, the hero. The door is open (at) Anfield,” Filex Kimtai rejoiced.
“Highly unlikely, but the lad is good,” Clive Govender expressed pessimistically.
“Not in a million years!” Keith McCormack dismissed the claim.
Following the contrasting views in the comment section, which raised a debate on whether the former England international would return to the Premier League, DUBAWA decided to fact-check the claim.
Verification
DUBAWA checked Greenwood’s current contract with Marseille and discovered that the 23-year-old agreed to a five-year permanent deal with the Ligue 1 side. This happened in 2024, and his contract is still on.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) also reported the agreement, mentioning that Greenwood’s deal with the French club is “until 2029.”
However, the People’s Person reports that the forward will likely leave Marseille in the summer. Despite an impressive performance in his appearances in France during the 2024/2025 season, critics have pointed out certain lapses in his play, including his defensive work and pressing, which are key aspects of coach Robert De Zerbi’s game plan. However, Greenwood has not indicated interest in any club yet.
In March 2025, Goal.com reported that Greenwood had suddenly “slipped under the pecking order” with coach De Zerbi, which saw the striker miss out on the team’s first starting 11. The sports news outlet further reported that if the one-cap England international fails to impress the manager before the end of the season, he will depart the French club.
Yahoo Sports reported on April 21, 2025, that Liverpool is bidding for the striker and has proposed €75 million to purchase him. As the Reds are ready to dispose of Darwin Nunez, they would want a striker to replace the Uruguayan. Sports news outlet ChosenBiz also corroborates the development. It added that Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), who have previously indicated interest in the forward, would now enter a bidding war with Liverpool for the 23-year-old.
However, Greenwood has not publicly announced his preferred club before the summer transfer window in any of these developments.
Conclusion
The claim is false. Despite talks of a possible move away from Marseille and Liverpool’s interest in the forward, Greenwood has not publicly announced interest in joining Liverpool this summer.
