A Facebook user, Sekou Samola Sheriff, posted on a popular social media platform, FRIES FM, claiming that the government of Liberia has cancelled the free WAEC fees for twelve graders.
Former President George Weah announced in January 2018 the waiver of WAEC, now West African Senior School Certificate Examination, fees for 12th graders at private and public schools.
Since the introduction of the free examination policy, the number of candidates has increased over the years.
But since the cancellation claim was made, many people have wondered whether it is true.
They have also been pondering the dire implications if the claim were accurate.
In the comment session, a commenter asked about the source and when such a cancellation was made, but the claimant has not responded.
Dubawa decided to conduct a fact-check on the claim made by Sekou Samola Sheriff as part of our mandate to promote truth in public discourse.
Verification
Our researcher contacted the claimant to request evidence of his claim, but he refused to respond to the numerous inquiries.
The researcher then contacted WAEC Liberia Boss, Dale Gbotoe, who denied the allegation as false.
“I do not think this is factual, as the Deputy Minister and I were together and he did not tell me anything of such. We have submitted the projected number of candidates for the 2026 examination to the Ministry of Finance for inclusion in the fiscal budget for 2026.”
The researcher also contacted the Director of Communication at the Ministry of Education, Maxime Bletahn, who also denied the claim and described it as a “lie”.
Meanwhile, the government has not released any information regarding the cancellation of the free WAEC fees policy.
Conclusion
Based on the responses from the Ministry of Education and WAEC Liberia, Sekou Samola Sheriff’s claim is false.
