Following the death of Diogo Jota, a professional footballer for Liverpool and Portugal, a video surfaced on social media showing a group of people dressed in Liverpool jerseys holding a solemn march. The caption accompanying the video suggested that Nigerian fans were mourning the late football star.
Jota, 28, died in a car accident alongside his younger brother, André Silva, on July 3, 2025, in Zamora, Spain. The brothers were en route to catch a ferry to England for pre-season training when their vehicle, a Lamborghini, suffered a tyre blowout and caught fire after veering off the road. Both were confirmed dead at the scene. Their remains were returned to their hometown in Portugal for burial, with family, football officials, and dignitaries in attendance.
A Facebook page called Nigeria Insiders shared a video with the caption: “Liverpool fans in Nigeria took to the streets in a solemn march to mourn the loss of Portuguese national, Diogo Jota.”
It was widely circulated on other social media platforms here, here, here, here, here and here.
Verification
A closer review of the footage revealed the banners carried by the mourners, which read “Northern Uganda Liverpool Fans.” This detail contradicted the claim that the march took place in Nigeria.
Further checks by DUBAWA using a Google search revealed that Ugandan radio station Kampala Radiocity 97FM shared the video on its verified Instagram account. The post reads, “Liverpool fans in Gulu held a procession this morning to honour their fallen forward Diogo Jota, who passed away in a car accident on Thursday, together with his brother Andre.”
Gulu is situated in the northern region of Uganda. It is the main urban centre of Gulu District, serving as both a commercial and administrative hub.
Conclusion
The claim that Nigerian Liverpool fans held a procession to mourn Diogo Jota is false. The video was shot in Gulu, Northern Uganda, not Nigeria.
