On Friday, June 6, 2025, the Liberia National Police (LNP) charged and detained five sitting lawmakers of the House of Representatives at its headquarters in Monrovia.
The lawmakers, the majority of whom are partisans of the former ruling Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), were among other things charged with arson, criminal conspiracy, recklessly endangering lives, and criminal attempt to commit murder.
Representatives Jacob Debee, Dixon Seboe, Priscillia Cooper, Abu Kamara, and ex-speaker Fonati Koffa were charged.
On Saturday, June 7, 2025, four lawmakers were forwarded to the Monrovia Central Prison for court trial.
During the transfer, so many users of Facebook posted that the police were also arresting many other people from the opposition. Among those the users claimed were arrested was the ex-chairperson of the former ruling CDC, Mulbah Morlu.
The posts are also here and here.
Due to the tension caused by the arrest of the five lawmakers, DUBAWA decided to investigate the information about Morlu’s arrest.
Verification
DUBAWA contacted the LNP spokesperson, Cecelia Clarke, for verification.
She stated that the LNP did not arrest Morlu on Saturday, as it is being insinuated.
“That claim is false. The police never arrested Mulbah Morlu,” Clarke said. “We did not even come in contact with him at any point.”
DUBAWA also spoke with Mulbah Morlu to further verify the information about his arrest.
During the phone conversation, Morlu requested a WhatsApp conversation. When asked about the news of his arrest via WhatsApp, he gave no response.
Almost an hour after the interaction with DUBAWA, Morlu took a post to his official Facebook page with the caption, “No arrest…”
Conclusion
The post from multiple Facebook users that the LNP arrested Mulbah Morlu is false.
