Following discussions about alleged genocide in Northern Nigeria, the United States (US)  President Donald Trump ordered the Department of War to prepare for a possible military intervention in Nigeria after he criticised the Nigerian government for the rampant killings of Christians in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Nigeria has welcomed the assistance of the US in combating terrorist groups. It refuted Trump’s claims of Christian genocide in Nigeria and stated that Islamic extremists attack its citizens irrespective of their religious beliefs.

Amidst this development, a Facebook user, Lyke Henry, claimed that Trump accused Nigerian President Bola Tinubu of petitioning the White House in 2014 over the rampant killings of Christians, and has granted the petition under Tinubu’s government for the same act.

“Tinubu Was the One Who Reported Christian Killings in 2014—I’ve Just Approved His Own Petition!” Trump allegedly said.

“Tinubu Asked the White House to Invade Nigeria in 2014 Over Christian Killings— I’ve Just Approved His Own Request Under His Government!” The Facebook user further quoted Trump.

Similar claims were shared on Facebook, X, and Instagram.

As of Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2025, the post has garnered eight likes and four shares.

Following Trump’s military threat on Nigeria and the waning diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the US, DUBAWA decided to verify the authenticity of the Facebook post.

Verification

DUBAWA conducted a keyword search for credible news reports of Tinubu petitioning the White House in 2014 over the rampant killings of Christians in Nigeria. Still, there were no verified reports about it.

We also checked Trump’s X handle and the White House’s X handle for the US president’s alleged assent to Tinubu’s petition to the White House, but we found nothing.

We also searched both local and international news outlets for reports about Trump’s assent to Tinubu’s alleged petition, but found no reports about it.

DUBAWA noticed that it is not the first time the Facebook claimant has shared false information on public topics in Nigeria. He once shared a post alleging that President Trump declared the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Nyesom Wike, wanted for killing Igbos during the Obi-Igbo Crisis in Rivers State, and another that former president Olusegun Obasanjo cautioned provoking Igbos to retaliate in Lagos.

Conclusion

The claim is false. Careful search engine queries indicate that neither credible media outlets nor the White House shared any information that Trump accused Tinubu of petitioning the US over Christian killings in 2014. Furthermore, DUBAWA discovered that the claimant is in the habit of purveying false and unverified information via his Facebook handle.
