On July 25, 2025, President Bola Tinubu appealed to Generation Companies (Gencos) to exercise patience with the federal government to complete the verification and validation of the N4 trillion it owes them.

The president’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, stated that the special adviser to the president on energy, Olu Verheijen, said that a N4 trillion bond programme had received anticipatory approval from Tinubu in response to the liquidity shortfall in the power sector.

While appreciating the president’s action towards the generation companies, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, stated that the current government has attracted investors and improved performance in the power sector. He further mentioned many achievements the current administration has made, including launching Nigeria’s first National Integration Electricity Policy, attracting $2 billion in new private capital, and reducing the frequency of the national grid collapse.

He said, “There has been no national grid collapse in 2025.”

Due to the recurrence of power outages in Nigeria and the claimant’s position, DUBAWA decided to verify the claim.

Verification

We conducted a keyword search to see if any credible news outlet had reported that Nigeria witnessed a national grid collapse in 2025.

The Vanguard newspaper reported on Feb. 12, 2025, that the nation’s electricity grid had collapsed, citing @TheNationalGrid’s public announcement that there was a “grid disturbance.”  It further detailed that the development had caused the country to experience a power outage.

The Punch newspaper also reported a similar incident and added that there was a trip-off before the power went off before noon that day. As a result, most power plants had lost generation when the incident occurred.

Again, on March 7, 2025, The Guardian reported a nationwide blackout after the national grid collapsed for the second time in 2025. It noted that the outage had occurred due to a “major disturbance” on the national electricity grid.

Furthermore, two major electricity distribution companies, Ikeja Electric Distribution Company and Eko Electric Distribution Company, confirmed the outage.

Conclusion

The claim by the Minister of Power that Nigeria did not experience any national grid collapse in 2025 is false.
