After DUBAWA’s fact-check, multiple Facebook users deleted claims that Cameroon’s recently opened Lagdo Dam caused severe flooding in parts of Nigeria.

Devastating floods, mainly caused by climate change-related heavy rainfall, affected some parts of Nigeria between May and July 2025.

Amidst these severe incidents, multiple Facebook users posted a claim in July 2025 that Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam was released because Nigeria failed to create mitigation measures, leading to the severe flooding witnessed in some parts of the country at the period.

A keyword search showed that the claim had also gone viral in October 2022.

Due to the virality of the claim and the potential harm of misinformation on bilateral and international cooperation, DUBAWA conducted a fact-check.

Several credible sources revealed that Lagdo Dam releases, linked to Nigeria’s flooding, occurred in 2022. The Nigerian government also dismissed claims of a recent Lagdo Dam release, confirming that the water level remains low and no release has occurred.

Meanwhile, analysis of the footage attached to the claim shows that the supposed dam is Nigeria’s Kainji Dam, not Lagdo Dam.

DUBAWA’s fact-check found the claims to be false. Since then, Facebook has flagged the posts on various accounts with the label “False information. Reviewed by third-party fact-checkers.”

The flagged posts can be found here, here, and here.

Aside from Ifite Christain, other Facebook users also deleted their posts here and here.
