A post shared widely on Facebook by Born 2 Blog, with reactions and shares praising the newly built Freetown International Airport in Sierra Leone, called it “the best airport in Africa currently.” The post included attractive images of the airport terminal, sparking excitement and pride among Sierra Leoneans.

Because of its potential misinformation, DUBAWA decided to fact-check the claim.

Airports are ranked internationally based on passenger experience, facilities, efficiency, and global standards.

Verification

DUBAWA checked the international rankings of airports in Africa using Skytrax, a globally recognised organisation that issues annual awards for the world’s best airports.

According to the Skytrax 2025 rankings, Cape Town International Airport in South Africa is currently ranked as the best in Africa. It has consistently won this award over the years, followed by airports in Durban and Johannesburg.

DUBAWA also contacted Moseray Benjamin, a member of the media team at the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority. He confirmed that while the new Freetown International Airport is a significant improvement for Sierra Leone’s aviation sector, it has not yet been ranked by Skytrax as the best in Africa. He added that the new airport has brought international-standard facilities to Sierra Leone, but according to the Skytrax rankings, Cape Town International Airport remains the best in Africa.

Conclusion

The claim that Freetown International Airport is the best in Africa is misleading. Although the airport is modern and a source of national pride, Cape Town International Airport holds the official title as the best in Africa according to Skytrax.
