In the last week of Aug. 2025, falsehoods thrived across social media platforms endangering the information landscape in Nigeria. From the Yoruba Nation travel passport to Putin’s alleged threat to wipe Nigeria off the world map, DUBAWA’s investigations separated facts from fiction to enlighten and inform.

Find below a synopsis of some top claims DUBAWA fact-checked during the week.

  1. Yoruba Nation’s travel passports gaining acceptance

An X user shared an image claiming that the secessionist Yoruba Nation has launched a passport with legal recognition for international travels — as part of the agitation efforts to withdraw from Nigeria.

When DUBAWA checked, it was established that the clip was taken from a different image on Facebook, which was altered to promote such a narrative.

Therefore, the image was altered while the claim is not true. Read more here.

  1. Clip showing bandits seizing military vehicles in Nigeria misleading

Over the years, Nigeria has grappled with incessant insecurity which has altered the peace and living conditions of citizens particularly those of the northern states. Following consistent attacks on the country, a Facebook user shared a video of armed men with military vehicles, claiming to be terrorists invading a local market in Kwara State.

A Google reverse image search on the provenance of the Facebook video, linked the clip to an incident in Burkina Faso in 2024.  Click here for the full article.

  1. Video portraying ADC campaign ahead 2027 general elections

As the 2027 election draws closer, information about political candidates and parties are receiving massive engagement and participation.

In view of this, an X user shared a video with the claim that it was a recent campaign by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) political party in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, DUBAWA’S investigation traced the video to be from an independence anniversary celebration in Côte d’Ivoire, not  Nigeria as portrayed.

  1. Did Putin threaten to wipe Nigeria off world map?

A Facebook account @Rightsource TV, posted a video, claiming that Russian president Vladimir Putin has threatened to wipe Nigeria off the map, if the country continues to meddle in Burkina Faso’s affairs.

Findings by DUBAWA show no official report or credible media outlets confirmed the veracity of such information. Read more here.

  1. Unrelated rope crossing video linked to Nigeria

A Facebook user, Asare Obed, shared the footage of a woman crossing a river with the aid of a rope, claiming it was filmed in Nigeria.

Keyframes of the video were subjected to a reverse image search to trace the history of the video. The result led us to a similar video confirming it was from the collapse of the Morni Bridge in Darfur, Sudan. Therefore, the video is unrelated to any scene from Nigeria. Read more here.
