Claim: A TikTok user claims Man City’s forward, Haaland, regrets signing a new extension deal with the club.

Verdict: False. Findings show that the TikTok video clip has been digitally manipulated. Details from the original video published by Sky Sports inform of Haaland’s confidence in Man City’s response to its alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules.

On Jan. 17, 2025, Manchester City forward and Norway International, Erling Haaland, thrilled fans and the football community when he agreed to a nine-and-a-half-year contract extension with the top English club. Curiosity peaked late last year as uncertainty grew about whether the 2023 Ballon d’Or top contender wanted to remain with the eight-time Premier League winners.
Following his latest decision to remain at Etihad for a spell, the longest ever witnessed in the English league, a TikTok user, thedangerousai, claims the Norwegian allegedly regrets the deal.
Haaland, via a 19-second video clip, allegedly expressed regrets about signing the contract extension in bad faith, claiming he had done it in a state of drunkenness. He further fears the club may not clinch trophies like North London side Arsenal.
“I regret signing an extension with this club, honestly. This team stinks more than the diarrhoea I had last week. I do not know what I was thinking. I might have been drunk when I signed that because I cannot remember signing it,” Haaland allegedly expressed.
“We would just keep bottling and bottling and bottling. Uhm, I’m scared we would become Arsenal 2.0,” He lamented.
As of Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, the TikTok video clip has generated 7,986 likes, 139 comments, 431 bookmarks, and 797 shares.
In the comment section, while some TikTok users doubted the video’s originality, others believed it.
“Dangerous AI.” Isaac Nhassengo commented.
“The guy behind this AI must be a very smart poet.” Philip Brian expressed.
“We are actually finished (my defence).” Blogger Assanful lamented.
“The goalkeeper is one of the problems Man City has,” Ryan Halbert reacted.
Due to the contrasting views about the TikTok video and the subject’s sensitivity, DUBAWA decided to verify the claim.
Verification
DUBAWA subjected the video clip to a Google Reverse Image Search, which linked us with a sky sports video report. The report shares similar visual characteristics with the TikTok video clip but has a different audio version.
Unlike the details of the TikTok video clip, Sky Sports reported Haaland’s expressed faith in Man City’s response to the 115 charges of alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules. Man City awaits a verdict after a 12-week-long hearing, which was set to determine whether the English club breached financial rules between the 2009/2010 and 2017/2018 seasons that require clubs to tender accurate financial details of their sources of revenue.
However, in the media correspondence with Sky Sports, when Haaland was asked whether he was not worried about the uncertainties surrounding the 115 financial charges slammed on his club, he stated he has confidence in Man City’s ability to handle its Premier League battles regarding the charges.
“No, I haven’t thought of that or anything. I’m confident that the club knows what they’re doing. Yeah, in the end, I really don’t think I should speak too much about this because I haven’t. I have been here two and half years, so yeah, in the end, I’m confident that the club knows what to do,” The Norwegian responded.
Moreover, DUBAWA noticed the TikTok user posted the video clip on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, a day after Sky Sports published the interview. ONEFOOTBALL, BESOCCER and Mail Online also reported similar details published by Sky News.
However, no credible news outlet reported the alleged regret by Man City’s forward.
Conclusion
DUBAWA’s findings show that Haaland’s alleged utterances suggesting regret over a contract extension are false, as the video had been altered.
