Claim: On July 6, 2025, an X user (@USBiafra) posted a video claiming that former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari had died.

Verdict: Misleading. While the former president’s death has been confirmed, the funeral video does not show Buhari’s burial. It is from the funeral of Katsina State Governor Malam Dikko Radda’s mother.

The claim suggesting Muhammadu Buhari is dead surfaced online shortly after Premium Times disclosed that the former president had travelled to London for medical treatment.
The video shared by (@USBiafraFirst) on X showed a solemn funeral scene, with mourners gathered around a casket.
As the procession played, images of Buhari repeatedly appeared on the screen, each overlaid with the caption “RIP”. The visual effect was meant to portray that the funeral was his.
As of July 15, the post quickly went viral, garnering over 349,500 views, 174 comments, 354 shares, 862 likes, and 267 saves.
The video caused disbelief and speculation among users. One user (@Prince_hadex) said, “Are you creating content, or are you for real?”
Another user (@CubaTerra) commented: “Are they up to something now that MNK is coming out?” a reference to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in detention since 2021.
The Biafra leader’s name has recently resurfaced due to ongoing court proceedings and calls for release.
The video’s release timing (just after Buhari’s travel for treatment became public) is suspicious, so DUBAWA decided to verify the claim.
Verification
We conducted a Google Reverse Image Search on frames from the funeral video. We confirmed that the funeral procession was not Buhari’s but that of Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda’s mother. We also found news reports that confirmed this burial happened in March 2025.
Further checks by DUBAWA revealed that the same video had earlier been posted on TikTok by a user identified as (@bahari2521).
The newly created account had only four posts, all promoting the narrative that Buhari is dead. However, at the time of the report, the account, which had 11,800 followers and followed only two accounts, had been deactivated on TikTok.
However, on Sunday, July 13, 2025, news broke that former president Buhari had died at a London hospital at age 82.
Conclusion
The viral video of a burial procession is from the funeral of Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda’s mother, not Buhari. While the former president’s death has now been confirmed, the funeral video used was misattributed.
