For the latest edition of DUBAWA’s weekly round-up, we covered controversial issues from sport, politics, and health that went viral in Nigeria. We also went beyond Nigeria’s borders to provide context for matters of public interest.
Here are some of the claims we fact-checked:
- Sierra Leonean footballer Momoh I. Kamara won the CAF Young African Player of the Year 2025 award

A Facebook user, “Socialist Thullah,” shared a post claiming that Sierra Leone’s Momoh Kamara had won the CAF Young African Player of the Year 2025 award. The post featured Kamara’s image and congratulatory text, referencing President Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to investing in Sierra Leonean football.
Our findings and review of credible sports sources and official CAF channels shows that Momoh I. Kamara has only been nominated for the award, not declared the winner.
- Obasanjo claim Igbos control Lagos through ownership and investment

An Instagram post alleged that former President Olusegun Obasanjo said the Igbos do not need to fight the Yorubas to “win Lagos,” as most Yorubas live in Igbo-owned houses. The post also claimed that Lagos would be “empty overnight” if Igbos withdrew their support.
When DUBAWA checked, we saw that no credible report or statement supports the claim. The link attached to the post redirects to random, unrelated Facebook pages.
Finally, Domain checks also show it is from a newly registered, unverified site.
- Bread increase arthritis pain

A Facebook user claimed that bread causes arthritis, describing the two as “lovers.” The self-acclaimed doctor, who has over 491,000 followers, wrote, “Bread and arthritis are lovers. Wheat feeds inflammation. Inflammation attacks joints. Remove bread and watch the pain fade. It’s not old age. It’s your breakfast…”
DUBAWA reviewed using expert opinions and studies, and we saw that bread does not cause arthritis, but components like gluten and refined carbs in certain breads may exacerbate joint inflammation in sensitive individuals or those with autoimmune arthritis. To manage arthritis, avoiding or limiting these foods may help reduce symptoms.
- TikTok audio featuring Trump, Traoré commenting on Africa’s independence

A viral TikTok audio claims to feature U.S. President Donald Trump and Burkina Faso’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, making statements about Africa’s independence and Burkina Faso’s relationship with the West.
We analysed the video and saw that there is no evidence that Donald Trump or Ibrahim Traoré made the statements circulating in the viral audio. The audio uses AI-generated voices to imitate both leaders and spread misinformation. Therefore, the claim is false.
- Cooking with alcohol is healthy

A Facebook user identified as Ewere Obi uploaded a video showing her preparing food with several brands of alcoholic beverages.
DUBAWA checked and saw that cooking with alcohol may improve the taste and aroma of food, but it is not without health risks.
Scientific evidence shows that alcohol is never entirely removed through heat, and consuming such meals exposes the body to residual amounts that may strain vital organs over time.
