On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, a Facebook blog named Born 2 Blog made a post claiming that FBN Bank at Kakay Building in Lumley, Freetown, was on fire. The post quickly went viral, causing fear and panic among many Sierra Leoneans, especially those living around the area or doing business with the bank.
As the news spread on social media, people started calling friends and relatives to check if they were safe. Others rushed to the scene out of concern, trying to discover what had happened. Some people even shared the post without verifying the information. This led to more confusion and panic in both online and offline spaces.
Due to public interest and concern, DUBAWA decided to investigate the matter and uncover the truth behind the claim.
Verification
DUBAWA went to the scene to see whether there had been a fire at FBN Bank at Kakay Building, Lumley Branch, but there was none. DUBAWA also contacted an eyewitness who lives near the Kakay Building in Lumley. The resident, Cordelia Decker, stated clearly that the fire did not affect FBN Bank.
According to the eyewitness,
“It was not the bank that was on fire. The fire actually started in a small shop that is very close to the bank. I was around when it happened and saw it with my own eyes. Some people thought it was the bank because of the fire’s proximity, but it was not touched.”
This statement was supported by other people who confirmed that the fire incident was limited to the shop only and did not spread to FBN Bank or any other principal building.
