In response to the recent removal of fuel subsidy some transportation companies have reduced fares to help alleviate its impact on Nigerian citizens.

Following this development, Oyo Affairs, an Ibadan-based news medium, posted on Facebook that Nigerians can now take a flight from Lagos to Ibadan at a discounted price of N6,500.

This was in a caption attached to a video that captured an alleged celebration of Green Africa Airways’ first flight at Ibadan airport, Oyo State.

Appearing amidst a period of economic hardship due to rising inflation in Nigeria, the post has amassed over 266,000 views, 14,000 likes, and 1,300 comments. While many users expressed joy and admiration for Oluwaseyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo state, and his administration’s accomplishments, others, like Nickson Chiedozie Ugwoke, raised doubts about the possibility of such.

In the comment section, he typed, “It’s N15,000, not N6500. Stop lying to the public.”

“How are you sure about that price mentioned?” Olarewaju Akinwale, another user, questioned.

Similarly, Egena Peter did not believe the information and said, “6500 or 65,000? Abegi, calm down with the lies.”

In response to the emerging controversies, DUBAWA decided to fact-check this particular claim.

We conducted a keyword search on Google that led our findings to the websites of different media outlets that made publications around this subject.

According to PUNCH newspaper, Green Africa Airways recently launched discounted flight tickets from Lagos to Ibadan to bring “a convenient alternative to the traffic congestion on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.”

BUSINESSDAY, Metrostarng.com published a similar report.

Green Africa is an airline based in Lagos, Nigeria. On August 17, the company also posted an advert on X (formerly Twitter), encouraging people to buy its N6,500 flight ticket to Ibadan “for an Amala weekend with friends.”

We decided to buy our ticket through the airline’s website only to make more discoveries. Firstly, the N6,500 is only for a single trip. For a round trip, potential passengers have to pay a sum of N13,000.

Also, the ticket price of N6,500 is only available on specific days designated by the airline. On other days, the prices vary, ranging from N10,000 to N43,000 for a one-way ticket. To get the lower ticket cost, passengers must choose the assigned one-way ticket date or book a round trip, selecting departure and return dates on days the price is N6,500. Otherwise, they might not be able to take full advantage of this package.

Furthermore, passengers buying this ticket are limited to carrying only hand baggage, which must be at most a combined weight of 7kg.

Conclusion

The claim that one can now fly from Lagos to Ibadan or the other way round for N6,500 is true. Green Africa Airways offers this new service, accompanied by its specific terms and conditions.
